Project 24 – Twinning of Dover and Calais

Project 24 -The Covid epidemic has had a big impact and this relationship needs to be renewed.

Over 80 sportsmen and women, juniors and dignitaries crossed the channel by P&O Ferry early Saturday morning, on 10th June 2017, to take part in the 44th annual Dover – Calais Festival of Sport. The towns have been taking it in turns to host the festival, which is as old as their twinning, since 1973. The competition was both friendly and fierce with over 160 participants vying for the Victor Ludorum trophy in the 5 sporting disciplines that took part in the day, Table Tennis, Sea Angling, Basketball, Shooting & Pool. Dover managed to secure the cup for a second year, in a 3 – 2 victory.

Calais was twinned with Dover from early 1973

Dover’s link with Calais is based on our shared cross channel partnership and interests. The Towns support each other at significant civic occasions such as the Remembrance Sunday commemorations and other important events. There is a regular programme of visits for cultural and market events to encourage the development of tourism and cultural links, friendship and understanding.

For many years Dover and Calais held an annual twinning festival of sport with each town hosting in turn and arranging competitions over a wide range of sports and games for teams from both towns in everything from football to fencing. Clubs now continue to arrange friendly competitions on an individual basis.

Albany Place gardens is situated close to the bench for Twinning which makes it more important to improve the area with the Twinning bench.
